The Millrace Studios on the UO campus house many of the Art department facilities and are physically separated from the main campus by busy Franklin Boulevard. This separation created a safety concern and in 2009 the department of Architecture and Allied Arts along with the Department for Public Safety (DPS) approached designBridge to craft a solution that would help increase feelings of security for students working late in this part of campus. The initial proposal was for the design and construction of a safety kiosk, however it was quickly realized that many of the benefits of such a structure could be achieved through landscape design solutions that would not require the addition of a DPS staff person. The Garden Canvas team crafted an elegant and context sensitive design that combines principles of crime prevention through environmental design and installation infrastructure that will help to increase the presence of public art along the high-traffic service road adjacent to the site.
