In 2009 designBridge partnered the Product Design and Planning Public Policy and Management departments to write an Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) grant to investigate the feasibility of electric vehicle charging stations in Eugene, Oregon. designBridge’s responsibilities included zoning research, identifying potential charging station sites and conducting a feasibility assessment. One student from the designBridge program identified four potential sites; a gas station, restaurant, low-density shopping center, and a strip of parking near the downtown core. Upon completion of the pre-design phase the project was handed off to a product design studio at UO’s Portland program that generated several design proposals exploring what a charging station might look like. This information continues to be used by those endeavoring to promote electric vehicle use in the Eugene/Springfield area.
